K Starr’s Homemade Goods began four years ago when I returned from a trip to Rome that shocked me into a new color appreciation allowing me to see how starved for color my winter wardrobe was in Boston.  I started playing with beads to incorporate some bright, fun, playful color into my style on a single working girl’s budget.  After enough of those flattering “where did you find that?” questions, my business was born.

My designs are inspired in large part my grandmothers’ love for gaudy costume jewelry, and their willingness to let me wear as much of it as I could while playing dress up as a little girl.  Add frequent visits to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and MoMA in New York, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston for flair, drama and proportion.  Then factor in that while I love big dramatic pieces, I hate the weight and frequent financial burden of “serious jewelry”.  I design and make pieces that are easy to wear; comfortable, flexible, and priced so that one doesn’t feel the need to treat it like an heirloom.  Leave it in a drawer at work, lend it to a friend, or carry a few around in your bag or glove compartment to brighten your mood, your day or help that magical transformation from work into play.

I’ve recently transplanted myself to Maui and I am now gathering inspiration from the warm breezes, shifting tides, and lush vegetation of my tropical new home.  Now that I am located in a place blessed with year round warmth, necklines are no longer making a brief seasonal debut when it is warm enough to remove one’s scarf.  So my avid New England fans, longtime collectors, customers and friends will now benefit from my new island inspirations.

These “candy necklaces for grown-ups” are designed to withstand rough and tumble beach life but remain playful enough to inspire a regular practice of playing dress-up.  Each piece has been hand-crafted with much Aloha in the hopes that it inspires a sense of fun, play and quiet drama.
